How Fast Can a Koala Run?
There is no official record of a koalas running speed but it is said to be similar to a rabbits. This would mean that the running speed of a koala is over 20mph which is about a speed of over 32.3km/h. The body of a koala is around 0.60-0.85 meters long which is about 2-2.8 feet long. As for weight, a koala will usually weigh around 9-14kg which is about 19.8-30.9 pounds. Koalas are excellent climbers and spend most of their time in the trees. A koala will even sleep in the trees. Koalas are mostly nocturnal and a koala will sleep for up to around 18 hours a day. As for diet, koalas like to eat the eucalyptus leaves which come from eucalyptus trees. It is in these trees that the koalas prefer to spend their time. A koala will eat around 1-1.3kg of eucalyptus leaves a day. Koalas have a special digestive system which prevents them from being harmed by the poisons in the eucalyptus leaves. The digestive system of koalas contain symbiotic bacteria which degrade the toxic substances in the eucalyptus leaves. Koalas eat so many of these leaves that they take on a distinct smell from the oils found in these leaves which is said to smell like cough drops. The two inner digits of the koalas front feet and the innermost digit of the koalas hind feet are opposable which helps them grab onto things. The gestation period for a koala is around 34-36 days. The offspring of a koala is referred to as a joey. Somewhere after the first 5-7 months the joey will first start putting its head out of the mothers pouch. Then for up to around 6 weeks the joey is weaned on predigested eucalyptus that they lap up from their mother's anus. After the weaning period the joey will completely emerge from the pouch and start clinging to its mother's back. Then joey will cling to its mother's back until it is almost a year old. The koala population has decreased to to a chlamydia epidemic among koalas. In some parts of Australia the infection rate for chlamydia in koalas is extremely high. Koalas have also been getting killed by running onto the road where they were hit by cars. It is estimated that there might be less than 100,000 koalas left in the wild. As for lifespan, a koala will live for around 15-20 years.
