How Fast Can a Lion Run?
A lion can run at speeds up to 50mph which in kilometers is around 81km/h. A male lions body is around 1.9 to 2.2 meters long which is around 6-7 feet. That's not including the tail which is around 1 meter or 3.3 feet long. Male lions are about 1.2-1.3 meters tall at the shoulder or 3.9-4.2 feet tall at the shoulder. As for weight, a male lion weighs around 150-249kg which is around 330-550 pounds. A female lions body is around 1.4-1.6 meters long which is around 4.6-5.2 feet. Female lions are about 0.9-1.1 meters or 3-3.6 feet at the shoulder. As for weight, a female lion weighs around 120-179kg which is around 265-395 pounds. Lions live in groups called prides. A pride usually consists of 6 females and 2 males but they can be much larger. Their have even been prides with 40 members. As for diet, in the pride the females usually do the hunting while the males stay back and patrol the territory. Lions prefer to hunt large animals wildebeests, buffalo, and zebras. They will also steal kills from other predators through intimidation. Male lions constantly have to defend their pride from other males that are trying to take over the pride. If another male can successfully takeover the pride he will kill all of the previous males cubs. There are nine recent subspecies of lion that are currently recognized. The recent nine currently recognized subspecies of lion are: panthera leo persica, panthera leo leo, panthera leo sengalensis, panthera leo azandica, panthera leo nubica, panthera leo bleyenberghi, panthera leo krugeri, and panthera leo melanochaita. The gestation period for a lion is around 108 days. A lion will give birth to around 1-6 offspring. The offspring of a lion are referred to as cubs. A newborn lion cub will weigh around 1.2-2.1kg which is about 2.6-4.6 pounds. Lion cubs are born blind ad will not open their eyes until around a week after they are born. As for lifespan, a lion will live for about 10-15 years.
