How Fast Can an Ostrich Run?
An ostrich can run at speeds of up to around 43-45mph which is about 69.2-72.4km/h. A male ostrich can be around 2.1-2.8 meters tall which is about 6.9-9.2 feet tall. A female ostrich can be around 1.7-2 meters tall which is about 5.6-6.6 meters tall. As for weight, a male ostrich can weigh anywhere from 115-150kg which is about 254-331 pounds. A female ostrich will usually weigh around 100kg which is about 220 pounds. The legs of an ostrich are long and powerful. The legs of an ostrich can cover around 3-5 meters in a single stride which is about 9.8-16.4 feet. Since an ostrich has such powerful legs, its legs can be used as weapons. A kick from an ostrich can kill a human and each of their two-toed feet have a sharp claw on them. This claw can be around 10.2cm long which is about 4 inches long. As for diet, an ostrich will eat things like plants, roots, seeds, insects, and may even eat small animals like lizards. Ostriches live in small groups which are often referred to as herds. Male ostriches will often fight for breeding rights over the female ostriches. The alpha male will mate with the herds dominant female ostrich who is sometimes referred to as the dominant hen. The alpha male will also sometimes mate with the other females in the herd as well. All of the female ostriches in the herd will place their eggs together in the dominant hens nest. The eggs of the dominant hen will usually be in the center of the nest. The alpha male and dominant female will take turns sitting on the eggs. The alpha male will usually sit on the eggs at night and the dominant hen will usually sit on the eggs during the day. As for gestation period, the chicks will hatch in around 40 days. As for lifespan, an ostrich will live for about 30-40 years.
